It is not the role of our school district to take a stance on the issue, but it is our job to protect freedom of expression/free speech, and primarily, to protect our students and their learning environment.”

— Email sent out to the parents ofLCHS students

As students roll into the parking lot ready to start their day, they are shocked to see graphic pictures and protesters. Members of “Project Frontlines” plan to gather around Lake City High School for the next few days during student arrival and departure times.

An email was sent out to staff, telling teachers to advise their students to not associate with the protestors. An alternative email was sent out to parents providing other information about this group. This email states explains the goal of “Project Frontlines” which is to explain to young adults about abortions.

Lake City was warned that the group would be showing up,  but  were surprised when they showed up on Wednesday the 30th. “It is not the role of our school district to take a stance on the issue, but it is our job to protect freedom of expression/free speech, and primarily, to protect our students and their learning environment.” (From the e-mail sent out to parents.)  Our district had already dealt with this group in March, when they showed up at Coeur d’Alene High School.

Students here at Lake City have very different opinions on the matter. Sophomore Simon N states that, “it’s okay to show your views, but they shouldn’t express it in such a harsh way, especially when they have young children with them.”  On a different note, Tasha S. states that, “They have their right to support their own cause, but I don’t agree with how they put their message out.”

Because the protestors are standing out on the sidewalks, there is nothing Lake City can do because it is public property. However, that didn’t stop students, a group with signs saying “I’m not with stupid.” and “Just wear a condom” stood protesting the protesters.

With all of that going on, you can definitely see the different opinions here at Lake City, and also that students here will go after what they believe in.
