As stated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, between April and July 2012, the employment rate increased from 2.1 million to 19.5 million for teens aged 16-24. Many teens get a summer job, whether it is to help support the family, or just have some extra spending money. Former Labor Secretary Hilda Solis once said, “As young Americans all across the country prepare to head into a new school year, I’m excited to say that many more will take with them lessons learned through summer jobs.” Not only will you get a few extra dollars in your wallets, but you will also get life skills that can help you in developing who you become. For example, you can learn how to count back money, get better at communication, problem solving, and many other vital skills.

Many students find jobs at clothing stores, coffee stands, fast food restaurants, and theme parks. If you are looking for a job, you can check out what the counseling center has posted. If you need a job this summer, keep an open mind on what you would like to do. Being a teenager, it can be more difficult to find a job, which isn’t to say you won’t find one. To start the process, you can bring in resumes and pick up applications at different employers. Just be patient–you won’t always find one as soon as you hope.
