The Couch-to-5k Running Plan

Simon Nilges, Arts & Entertainment Editor

Ever wanted to run a 5k? Ever thought that a 5k is too much for you? There is a program on the internet that may be able to help you reach that goal. It’s called the Couch-to-5k running plan.

The concept is simple. The program starts you off on an alternating cycle between walking and running. For example, the first workout asks you to jog for 60 seconds, and jog for 90 seconds. Over a period of nine weeks, the program slowly decreases the walking time and increases the running time. At the end of the ninth week, you’ll be able to run for 30 minutes, which is the same as a 5k!

It’s a good idea to start by walking for short periods of time before starting the program if you are not conditioned to exercise whatsoever; otherwise, the program may prove difficult for you. Always stretch before and after running, and walk for five minutes before each workout. Also, try to practice good health in other areas of your life, such as nutrition. Keep a close eye on articles from Bailey Camp. She will give you some good information on that subject.

If you want to start running and improving your health, this is a great way to do it. Also, since the cold Idaho weather here is starting to improve, now is a great time to start. Happy running!
