Lake City wrestling went to district wrestling this last weekend at Lakeland High School. A varsity wrestler from each weight class wrestled for their chance to participate at state wrestling. Each wrestler from Lake City wrestled twice, and if they won both times, they went on to a third match. If they won that, they went to consolation matches to decided if they took third place or if they were in finals.

Eight Lake City wrestlers placed and made it on to state. Kieron Ove, a freshman, took third place. Mikey Kelley, a sophomore, took third. Ron Schmidt also took third and made it on to state.

All of our 2nd place district wrestlers were seniors. Killian Konda, Dylan Woodworth, Michael Carr, and Corey Cook all took 2nd place. They all wrestled their hearts out and it was a wonderful season full of accomplishments for them. Zion Dixon was the only Lake City wrestler to take first at districts. He is now ranked first in the state for the 285 weight class.

I don’t like to see them lose. They don’t cry most of the time, but I tear up a lot when I know they should have made it to state.”

From a spectator’s view, districts was a very emotional tournament. I overheard many mothers congratulating their sons and some consoling them for their loss. Izzy Hinkle, a spectator, said “I don’t like to see them lose. They don’t cry most of the time, but I tear up a lot when I know they should have made it to state.”

All of the varsity wrestlers worked very hard this season and it paid off for a lot of them. They left for state on thursday February 26th. They will arrive home early Sunday morning. All of us are wishing them luck, and hoping they bring home medals.
