Leonard Nimoy, widely known as Mr. Spock from Star Trek, died on Friday, February 27th in Los Angeles, California. Trekkies everywhere took to Twitter and other social media websites to honor the loss of the iconic Mr. Spock. Wil Wheaton, who was also in the Star Trek franchise as Wesley from Star Trek: Next Generation, said, “We stood on your shoulders, and wouldn’t have had a galaxy to explore if you hadn’t been there, first. Thank you, Leonard, Rest in peace.” Zachary Quinto, who plays Mr. Spock in the new Star Trek movies, Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness, said on Instagram, “my heart is broken. i love you profoundly my dear friend. and i will miss you everyday. may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”

Star Trek fans in Canada have taken a fairly unusual approach to honoring Nimoy. The Canadian Trekkies have taken to drawing Spock’s face onto the Canadian five dollar bill. This movement has been dubbed, “Spocking.” Although this is, in my opinion, a very interesting and enjoyable movement, the Canadian government officials are asking fans to stop. It is not technically illegal to deface these bills, but it apparently does decrease the circulation lifetime according to an article from Fox News. Another reason that they are encouraging Canadians to stop is that it distracts from the national pride of Canada.

In honor of this tragic passing, we should all take a moment to remember Leonard Nimoy during this sad time.
