As we all must know, Kendrick Lamar, a 15-time Grammy-Award-winning rapper from Compton, California, just released his 3rd studio album “To Pimp a Butterfly” on March 16th. The album includes artists from Snoop Dogg, Schoolboy Q, all the way to underground artists such as Thundercat and Anna Wise. Lamar describes the album as spoken-word poetry with influence of jazz and funk. He also describes the meaning as “honest, fearful, and unapologetic.” Lamar said in his interview with Rolling Stone Magazine that the name of the album was a play on of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. He also said that “Putting the word ‘pimp’ next to ‘butterfly’…it’s a trip. It will be a phrase forever. It’ll be taught in college courses–I truly believe that.”

To prep the world for his, at the time, upcoming album he released the song “I” which Lamar explained as a song about self expression, which was inspired by the lack of self confidence and love on the streets of Compton. To be a contrast of the single, Lamar produced another song on his album titled “u” he said in an interview with Rolling Stone that “u” was one of the hardest songs he has had to write. It was about all of his insecurities and selfishness and let downs. No matter what you experience in life if you learn from it, it will help.
